Here’s how 2,000 company directors ranked law firms around the U.S., according to a survey conducted by Corporate Board Member .
The results show that 34 firms continue to hold the first places they won last year, among them Hale & Dorr in Boston and Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix—doubtless a signal that their clients are getting what they pay for.
At the same time, changes in how other firms rank, among the top five and elsewhere in the survey, reflect the take-no-prisoners competition for clients that is so common in the legal profession. Some firms have dropped off our top-five lists entirely. Most will be striving for a comeback, but at least one has taken its final bow. Brobeck Phleger & Harrison, No. 1 in Austin, Texas, last year, No. 2 in its home area of San Francisco, and No. 3 in San Diego, folded in January. Those prized slots didn’t stay empty, of course. Law firms, like nature, abhor a vacuum.
