Winners in 25 Metro Areas

from July/August 2005

Twenty firms that held the top spots last year retained them in Corporate Board Member ’s latest local rankings. The five newcomers to 2005’s No. 1 position were Cravath Swaine & Moore in New York City; Fulbright & Jaworski, Houston; Hogan & Hartson, Washington, D.C.; Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, Charlotte; and Ropes & Gray, Boston.

Some of these were newer to the top place than others, however. Cravath came in first in New York in 2001 (when this special issue made its debut) and again in 2003. Fulbright & Jaworski led the Houston list in 2003, and Robinson Bradshaw was No. 1 in Charlotte in 2002.

As in previous years, local races were closely fought, sometimes to a tie. In Detroit, two firms shared first place: Dykema Gossett and Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone.

A large number of individual attorneys also merit kudos. We arbitrarily picked four standouts to profile—a lawyer who does battle with Donald Trump, another who watches legal scripts (written and otherwise) in Hollywood, a mouthpiece for Big Tobacco, among other clients, and a specialist in the growing legal arena of retiree benefits.
