Winners in 25 Metro Areas
from July/August 2007
Five of last year’s runners-up vaulted to first place in the 2007 metropolitan-area rankings, according to the Corporate Board Member /FTI Consulting survey, and another five climbed into ties with the 2006 local leaders. Standing alone as top-ranked law firms in their respective areas are newly anointed Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago, Holland & Hart in Denver, Baker Botts in Houston, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll in Philadelphia, and Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis in Pittsburgh. Firms deadlocked with last year’s leaders for No. 1 are Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, which tied with O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles; Quarles & Brady, with Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee; Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt, with Stoel Rives in Portland; Armstrong Teasdale, with Bryan Cave in St. Louis; and Latham & Watkins, with Cooley Godward Kronish in San Diego.
Skadden Arps, the seven-time national leader, held on to the top spot in the New York area. And though it shares the lead in 2007, Milwaukee’s Foley & Lardner is one of 10 firms that have consistently ranked No. 1 among directors asked to name the outfits in their areas that they would want to represent them in general legal matters. The others are Jones Day in Cleveland, Vorys Sater Seymour & Pease in Columbus, Greenberg Traurig in Miami, Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, Bass Berry & Sims in Nashville, Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix, Stoel Rives in Portland, Bryan Cave in St. Louis, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in San Francisco.
Along with the listings of top law firms in the 25 metro areas, we show how some denizens of these cities take their individual bites out of life.
